Rock and Glide

So....I need some advice.

Chad and I have almost all the big stuff for the baby room, except the rocker or glider. But, I'm not sure which way to go. Target and Wal-Mart sell glider rockers I like with nice padding on the arms and back. But, I think it would be cuter to get a glider, paint it white, and cover the pad in the accent color for the room (orange or kiwi....we'll see) ....but there wouldn't be any padding on the arms, and the padding for the bum and back wouldn't be as thick. So, basically, I like the look of one more, but the other seems more comfortable. I love rockers that look like soft chairs, but those are at least $300.

So, what has everyone else used? Do you even rock or glide that often? Does extra padding everywhere make a big difference? Gliders also seem really thin, are they comfy? Do you recommend getting the ottoman too? Could I just use a stationary chair, or would that be crazy?

My parents got us a glider and I don't know what I would do without it. I think if you are going to be nursing, padded arms are the way to go. Nursing it difficult in the begining. Trying to make it comfortable for both of you is hard and I think the paded arms are a must have. I think you would be grateful to have them when your up every 2 hours or so through the night.

I don't know much about either - we've never had one. But I would definitely recommend getting something. We have a rocker-recliner and you definitely need the motion. Rocking does wonders for helping them to settle down and even get to sleep as infants. Not too recently, but at least within the last 6 months I have used it with Ethan. It can take a whiny, cranky, squirmy toddler (you have to hold 'em tight though) and calm them down if you are patient enough. I say, ultimately, go for comfort as your #1, looks #2.

When we had our first, Jeff and I bought a leather recliner (on the advice of friends). I swear that was the best purchase ever made. It may not be the most beautiful/decor-friendly, but definetly worth it. I cannot tell you how many times I have fallen asleep in that chair with one of the girls. COMFORT is the way to go, especially at 1:00 am when you are TIRED. Anyway....I suggest going for comfort over looks!

we got a glider on craigslist really cheap that had all the cushions. I recovered them but ended up getting rid of the arm rest cushions, & now I wish I would have kept them. I really like the big soft chair ones too. I have totally coveted the ones in the nursing mothers room at church, they are SO comfy! you might be able to find those kind cheaper at Eugene Liquidators on 99 & Roosevelt, or on Craigslist. Craigslist is the bomb! You can get anything you need & super cheap.

Which ever you get, make sure it is comfy and doesn't make noise when you get up. I would get something to put your feet on. You will want it when you nurse.

Rocker! Rocker! Rocker! Yes, I agree the are not the cutest, and a bit bulky, but a must have non the less. Ben got me one when I was about to have Luke, and it is the most used piece of furniture we have. There are so many long nights with a newborn and if you can't be in bed, choose the next most comfortable option...a rocker in my opinion. :) good luck!

I'd go with a glider...you'll be amazed at how much time you'll spend in that chair...especially for the first few months. Be comfy! I loved my glider and missed it with my last baby. It had gone through four babies and was trashed. I have a rocking chair but it's not nearly as comfy. Also, definately get the ottoman.

I have a one of those comfy rockers and I love it! Ours was from a gently used furniture store and I have loved rocking my babies in it. I've used some gliders and unless you buy the cream of the crop, they aren't that comfortable to me, at the least the seat isn't anyway. Go for comfort. If you get a glider (the gliding motion is great) definitely make sure that you have padding on the arms and extra padding in the seat.

I had 0 chairs when Liv was a baby. She ended up sleeping in our bed... a LOT! Where to nurse in the middle of the night if you don't have something? I got a glider for Christmas (for Claire) I really love it. It has padding on everything. Personally I can't nurse in the rockers because the arms are so high up that the baby can't fit and it is awkward for me... I don't really get how to situate myself while nursing... Anyway- when looking at them pretend to nurse a baby to see what works best for you!!! Also- rocking/gliding really does help put them to sleep! I reccomend that you get one- it is a good investment.

I had an old recliner that I used. It was PERFECT! It was especially nice on nights that Elijah was feeling ill. Either one of us would put our feet up and lean back to sleep. When Elijah was hungry again, I would simply sit up and nurse him. It was the best thing for the first few months.

I have had both and I like a rocker better. Even a rocking recliner is good enough and comfy enough for me to rock my baby. However, if you don't up getting either, you will survive. Those mom instincts will kick in and you'll rock her anywhere.
